Generalized Anxiety Symptoms

To be diagnosed with having a general anxiety disorder, one needs to have at least three generalized anxiety symptoms for at least six months.  That means that one is going to be having anxiety symptoms for the majority of the days in a six month period, and these anxiety symptoms are going to make life very difficult to manage.

Sure, we all feel some form of anxiety symptoms sometime in our lives, but when suffering from general anxiety disorder, these anxiety symptoms are going to be more severe than those that all of us know from daily life.

There are six common generalized anxiety symptoms that manifest themselves, and to be diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, you need to have at least three of them.
1. Muscle tension
2. Being overly irritable
3. Having trouble staying asleep or waking up in the middle of the night
4. Having trouble staying on track or concentrating
5. Restlessness
6. Being easily tired

Having one of these anxiety symptoms can disrupt a person’s life, but having three of them for a long period of time will definitely ruin a person’s life, and probably also affect those surrounding them as well.  Generalized anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental health problems in the United States.  About 6% of the adult population in the United States suffers from this condition, which means that this isn’t some obscure problem that no one has heard of.

The majority of the sufferers of these generalized anxiety symptoms are women - the disease affects about twice as many women as men.  These anxiety symptoms usually start coming out in childhood or adolescence, but it is not uncommon for them to appear first in adulthood.

Like other anxiety disorders, with generalized anxiety disorder, there are different levels of impairment.  For some of the luckier sufferers, it is very easy to live with, and they can go on with their normal business every day.  On the other hand of the scale, many sufferers are paralyzed with fear, and can’t leave their houses.  Those suffering from these anxiety symptoms are always worrying about their family, themselves, their work and every little problem they have.  They can’t stop thinking about their problems to matter how big or small they are.

Those suffering from generalized anxiety symptoms can’t get rid of the feeling that something bad is going to happen.  Going through life with excessive worry is definitely not the road to happiness.  Since over one in twenty people experience these anxiety symptoms, it really makes one realize that those suffering from this problem are not alone.
